Creative Halloween Decorating Tips

Decorating for Halloween can be a lot of fun, especially when you let your creativity flow, and ask the kids to participate! Here are some of my favorite tips to transform your home into a spooky haven.

1. Embracing Nature

One of our most favorite family things is being out in nature. This was one of the reasons in moving to where we are now from the claustrophobia of a cul-da-sac on a hill. Nowhere to roam without traffic or someone looking over our shoulders.

So when it comes time to decorate for the fall season, the best parts are all the natural materials that are available for decorating! My kids and I enjoy gathering colorful leaves, and pinecones during our walks. The driveway is lined with blue spruce trees which are amazing for these. If you have leaves in your year or can find them during family walks, then you can make wonderful decorations as well! For example, collect a variety of leaves and arrange them in a glass vase with some twigs for an eye-catching centerpiece. You can also mix these natural elements into a fall wreath that enhances your front door, inviting guests in with a rustic touch.

2. Spooky Decor

With the weather getting chillier, it isn't always ideal for little ones to be outside for long periods of time. Get crafty inside is perfect with some DIY projects! We love making ghostly figures using white sheets and balloons. Inflate a balloon, drape a sheet over it, and draw spooky faces with a marker. Hang these ghosts from trees or your porch for a fun yet eerie effect. Additionally, an easy project is making tombstones from cardboard. Paint them gray and write funny or spooky epitaphs for a unique touch.

3. Pumpkin Power

No Halloween decoration is complete without pumpkins, sitting on and around hay bales! I enjoy carving pumpkins with my family, but painting them provides a fun artistic twist, and an easier/cleaner option for younger ones. Use vibrant colors and patterns to create a distinctive display. Don’t forget to save the seeds for roasting later! Roasted pumpkin seeds are not only delicious but also a great source of protein—about 7 grams per ounce, packed with antioxidants, and help with blood sugar levels, heart health and sleep. Who doesn't need better quality sleep! Numerous health benefits, and an easy snack for the kids to help with and eat!

4. Lighting for Ambiance

As the sun sets earlier, good lighting becomes crucial for setting the mood. I use string lights and lanterns to create a warm glow throughout our house. Placing led candles inside jack-o'-lanterns indoors provides a classic touch while outdoors tea lights work perfectly, delivering a spooky ambiance as the flickering light dances across your porch.

5. Adding Special Touches

From one family to another, everyone will have unique ideas on how decorating your space will end up. Smaller kidlets will appreciate pumpkin's carved into cats, smiley and silly faces. Older children and adults will like the more scary, spooky and interesting decor. In either case, the Halloween season will be something that will bring the family together to do fun, creative and different things!

This is where I absolutely love to get enthralled in, deep into ever facet of this holiday. Afterall, it is my favorite and close to my heart since I was a child. Not for all the ugly and gross decor, & weird movies that should of never been made, but the eery, spooky, mist-lined driveways and paths. The way the full moon shines through the spruce trees and you can hear the sounds of an owl in the distance. And I can't forget, the sound of children's laughter and footsteps, going house to house collecting candy treats, and saying "trick or treat!".

A childhood memory I will never forget, the smell of the fresh, crisp, autum air as I waked home after a long night with friends and a heavy bag of candy. Those days, you didn't need parent to come, the benefits of growing up in a small northern town. I still remember the smell.

Harvesting the Last of the Hardy Vegetables

As the Halloween season approaches, it’s also time to harvest the last of the hardy vegetables from the garden. This year, my garden yielded a variety of root vegetables, including spaghetti & acorn squash, beets, and plenty of kale. The cooler weather enhances their flavors, making them even more delightful. As soon as these are in, my first job is to make Kale Chips, a family fav any time of the year. Super easy, fast and full of nutrients your body needs.

1. Timing is Key

Knowing when to harvest is crucial. I typically wait until the first frost, which sweetens the vegetables—for instance, my beets taste even better after the frost. Digging into the earth to uncover these treasures brings a rush of excitement! I have wanted to also try my hand at carrots, as these also sweeten after the first frost. Upcoming spring project is to revitalize one part of our garden to have the depth of good soil to be able to grow them in.

2. Storage Tips

Once harvested, proper storage is vital. Root vegetables thrive in a cool, dark place, while leafy greens should be refrigerated to maintain freshness. Especially with kale, to keep its crispness, it must be refrigerated. It becomes difficult depending on how much you have to store. I typically try to harvest when I know I have time to make kale chips. If I won't be able to do all, I leave it growing. It's very cold hardy and can remain in the garden even after the first few frosts. I still have one growing strong at the moment.

3. Incorporating Harvest into Meals

The best part of harvesting is using these fresh ingredients in my cooking. I often prepare hearty soups and stews that warm the soul. Full of vitamins and minerals to help stave off the start of the cold/flue season, and to bulk up meals to last multiple days. Not having to cook daily is always a welcome, as we then focus on the kids, homework and anything ele needing to be caught up on.

Delicious Autumn Recipes

Warm and satisfying meals that celebrate the flavors of fall don;t need to be complicated or time consuming. It's a great time to pull out the ol' crockpot or oven roaster. Here are a few of my favorite recipes that are perfect for this season.

1. Roasted Root Vegetable Medley

This dish celebrates the season’s bounty. Chop up your favorite root vegetables, toss them with olive oil, salt, and herbs, and roast them in the oven until golden brown. The result is a sweet, savory side dish that pairs perfectly with any meat. Any left overs can be blended up the next day into a creamy soup, topped with a dollop of cream.

2. Hearty Chicken Soup

Nothing says fall like a warm bowl of Chicken soup. I add roasted chicken meat with vegetable broth, garlic, and spices to create a hearty, comforting soup. By topping it with croutons or adding your choice of rice or any kind of noodle, it can made your own.

3. Apple Crisp

One of my favorites for dessert, I can’t resist making a classic apple crisp. Sliced. fresh apples, toss them with cinnamon and sugar, and top them with a crumbly oat mixture. Baked until bubbly, this dish is best served warm with a scoop of rum & raisin ice cream. It quickly becomes your family favorite.

Celebrating the Season

As the Halloween season unfolds, joyful moments will come from decorating my home, harvesting from my garden, and preparing warm meals my family love. This time of year is all about embracing nature's beauty and creating lasting memories with loved ones. Whether you’re crafting spooky decorations or cooking delicious recipes, I hope you find inspiration to celebrate the season in your unique way. Let's make this fall unforgettable!
